Ostia
Holman Bible Dictionary
(ahss tee uh) Roman city at the mouth of the Tiber about fifteen miles from Rome which, following construction of an artificial harbor by Claudius (A.D. 41-54), served as the principle harbor for Rome. Before this construction, silt prohibited seagoing vessels from using the port. Such vessels were forced to use the port of Puteoli about 138 miles to the south of Rome (Acts 28:13 ).
