Punon

Holman Bible Dictionary

(pyoo' nahn) Place name meaning, “ore pit.” Edomite mining center located at the junction of the wadi el-Gheweil and wadi esh-Sheqer on the east side of the Arabah about twenty-five miles south of the Dead Sea. The site was first occupied about 2200 B.C. The second occupation began shortly before the Israelites encamped there about 1200 B.C. (Numbers 33:42-43 ). The site was perhaps home to descendants of the clan chief Pinon (Genesis 36:41 ). The site is identified with modern Feinan. Two ancient smelting sites, khirbet en-Nahas and khirbet Nqeib Aseimer, lie to the north northeast.
