Holman Bible Dictionary

(ssee' luh-huhm mah' lih kahth) Place name meaning, “rock of hiding, haunt, refuge.” David's hiding place in the wilderness of Maon while Saul pursued him (1 Samuel 23:28 ). Modern translations often translate the name rather than transliterate it: “Dividing Rock” (REB), “Rock of Escape” (NRSV, NAS).
