Holman Bible Dictionary

(ssham' muh) Personal name of uncertain meaning, perhaps, “frightful” or “astonishing” or “he heard.” 1. Edomite tribe descended from Esau (Genesis 36:13 ). 2 . Older brother of David (1 Samuel 16:9; 1 Samuel 17:13 ) and father of Jonadab (2Samuel 13:3,2 Samuel 13:32 ) and Jonathan (2 Samuel 21:21 ) if the similar Hebrew spellings in 2Samuel point to the same person mentioned in 1Samuel. See 2 Samuel 23:25; spelled Shammoth in 1 Chronicles 11:27 ). 4 . Another of David's military heroes (2 Samuel 23:33 ) or, with a slight change of the Hebrew text suggested by many commentators, the father of Jonathan, the military hero (REB, NRSV, NIV). 5.
