Sleep

Holman Bible Dictionary

The natural state of rest for human beings and animals (Psalm 4:8 ). God causes state called “deep sleep,” sometimes for revelation (Genesis 2:21; Genesis 15:12; Job 4:13 ), and sometimes to prevent prophetic vision (Isaiah 29:10; compare 1 Samuel 26:12 ). It is also used as a sign of laziness (Proverbs 19:15 ). Sleep is a figure of physical death (John 11:11-14; 1 Corinthians 15:51 ). See Death; Eternal Life .
