Holman Bible Dictionary

(ssoh' coh) Place name meaning, “thorns.” 1. Town in southern Judah hill country used as a fortification against people approaching from the south (Joshua 15:35 ). It is modern Khirbet Abbad. Philistines gathered to battle Saul there (1 Samuel 17:1 ). Rehoboam fortified it (2 Chronicles 11:7 ). 2 . A town in the southern hill country of Judah about ten miles southwest of Hebron (Joshua 15:48 ) at khirbet Shuweikeh. 3. A town belonging to Ben-hesed (1 Kings 4:10 NRSV), one of the twelve officials who provided food for Solomon and his household. It is as-Shuweikeh west of Nablus and two miles north of Tulkarm. 4. A native of Judah, the son of Heber ( 1 Chronicles 4:18 ). Some interpreters feel that this is a place name rather than personal name. May be the same as 2.
