Sop

Holman Bible Dictionary

KJV translation of psomion meaning a small piece of bread that could be dipped in a dish or wine. It appears only in John 13:26-30 (compare Ruth 2:14 ). Most translators today use “morsel” (NAS) or “piece of bread” (NIV, NRSV). Today in Bible lands a host honors a guest by dipping a piece of bread into the sauce of the main dish and handing it to the guest. Most interpreters feel that Jesus was making his last appeal to Judas to change his mind. Then Jesus would accept him. Although Judas accepted the bread signifying friendship, John said, “Satan entered into him” (John 13:27 ). At that moment Judas gave himself over to the will of Satan and left to betray Jesus. See Judas .
