Spindle
Holman Bible Dictionary
Used only in Proverbs 31:19 , KJV translates “spindle” in the first line and “distaff” in the second line. Modern translations (NAS, NIV, NRSV) reverse the words in their translations. The distaff was a stick which held the fibers from which thread was spun. The spindle was a round stick with a round disk fastened closer to one end. The spun thread was wound around the spindle. See Cloth, Clothing .
