This was probably the once famous plant the papyrus ( Cyperus papyrus , Arab [Note: Arabic.] , babîr ), which now flourishes in the Huleh swamps. There are some twenty kinds of rushes in Palestine, but it is impossible to fit the references to any one kind, and, indeed, some kind of ‘reed’ (wh. see) is quite as probable, especially in Isaiah 58:5 .
