Sycomore

Hastings' Dictionary of the Bible

SYCOMORE ( shiqmîm . 1 Kings 10:27 , 1Ch 27:28 , 2 Chronicles 1:15; 2 Chronicles 9:27 , Isaiah 9:10 , Amos 7:14; shiqmôth , Psalms 78:47; (Gr.) sykomorea , Luke 19:4 ). This is the sycomore fig ( Ficûs sycamorus ), a tree often 50 feet high, with an enormous trunk. It bears poor figs ( Amos 7:14 ), but furnishes good timber. It is not to-day ‘In abundance’ as of old ( 1 Kings 10:27 ), but considerable numbers flourish still in the plain around Jaffa. This tree must not be confused with the ‘sycamore’ ( Acer pseudo-platanus ) of our home lands, which is a species of maple. See also Sycamine.
