1910 New Catholic Dictionary

(Latin: alimentum, nourishment) Support or maintenance; whatever is necessary for life, as food and drink, a home, clothing, care in sickness and death. Under it would fall the obligation of parents towards children, of children towards parents, husbands towards wives, of a religious order or congregation towards its members. For secular priests, maintenance is provided by means of the title for which they were ordained: a benefice, patrimony, or pension.
