Anniversary

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

(Latin: anniversarius, returning with the year)

A day celebrated yearly as it returns. The anniversary of the consecration of a bishop is celebrated in each diocese by a special Mass in the liturgy for this feast. The anniversary of the consecration (or dedication) of a church is celebrated by a special Mass and Office provided for this feast. The anniversary of the death of a person is celebrated annually and also on the third, seventh, and thirtieth day after the decease. There is a special Requiem Mass in the Roman Missal for the anniversary; it is customary also to offer other prayers and good works on this occasion. The anniversary of burial is sometimes commemorated instead of the day of death, with the same rites.
