Beaton, James (Ii)

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

(1517-1603) Archbishop of Glasgow, nephew of James Beaton of Saint Andrews; died Paris. After opposing for eight years the plans of the Scottish nobles to enrich themselves with the spoils of the Church, he went to Paris in 1560, where he acted as Scottish ambassador. In 1574 he was declared an outlaw by the Privy Council of Scotland. He was a faithful friend and adviser to Mary, Queen of Scots, and though in exile enjoyed the favor of James VI. In 1598 a Scottish Act of Parliament restored to him his heritages, honors, and benefices.
