Benedict Xii, Pope

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

Reigned from December 20, 1334 to April 25, 1342. Born c.1285in Saverdun, France as Jacques Fournier; died on April 25, 1342 at Avignon, France. A Cistercian, Bishop of Pamiers, and cardinal, he became the third of the Avignon popes. He sought to free the papacy from French influence and to restore the See to Rome. He curbed nepotism, granted benefices with discrimination, condemned "pluralities," and strengthened the Faith in outlying districts.
