Biel, Gabriel

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

(1425-1495) Called "the last of the Scholastics," born Speyer, Germany; died Tübingen. After serving as a preacher in the cathedral of Mainz, he became superior of the Clerics of the Common Life at Biitzbach, and assisted in founding the University of Tdbingen, where he became professor of theology, 1464. In his commentary on the "Sentences," though calling Occam his master, he constructed an orthodox theological system. His views in political economy were progressive, and his treatise on currency stigmatizes the debasing of coinage as dishonest exploitation of the people.
