Bonaventure Giffard

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

Bishop, born Wolverhampton, England, 1642; died Hammersmith, England, 1734. He was appointed court preacher by James II of England, and in 1688 was consecrated bishop in charge of the newly erected Midland vicariate Apostolic. A few months later during the Revolution he was thrown into prison, but was released in 1690, and continued his perilous missionary work till his death.
