Buisson de Saint-Côme, Jean François

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

(c.1667-1706) Martyr, born Pointe-Levi, Canada; died near Donaldsonville, Louisiana. He studied at the Seminary of Quebec, and was ordained, 1690. Sent on a mission to the West, he labored at the Cahokia (Tamaroa) mission in Illinois until c.1698,when he accompanied Fathers Montigny and Davion to the lower Mississippi to work among the Natchez. After a short time he returned to the Tamaroa, remaining there until 1701, when he again took up residence among the Natchez. While traveling to Mobile to seek relief from a serious illness from which he suffered, he and his party were murdered by savage Sitimaches, about 50 miles from the mouth of the Mississippi.
