Candelabrum
1910 New Catholic Dictionary
Name applied in early Christian times to a hanging chandelier for lamps, e.g., that presented by Constantine to the Lateran, Rome. Sometimes these chandeliers stood before the altar. In the Middle Ages the term was used to denote seven-branch candlesticks, e.g., the Candelabrum of Rheims and the Virgin's Tree of Milan, made in imitation of the candlestick of the Jewish Temple.
