Canterbury, England
1910 New Catholic Dictionary
Ancient diocese, the mother-church and primatial see of all England, from 597 until its suppression in the late 16th centuy. At one time there were 22 suffragan dioceses, and the archbishop had the right of crowning and anointing the sovereign. The cathedral, begun by Saint Augustine, was burned in 1067, and the restoration completed in 1495. Notable bishops include
