He was a Benedictine, lived a life of solitude, and founded the Benedictine Celestines. Two years after the death of Pope Nicholas IV he was elected pope by the Council of Perugia. An unwilling and incapable occupant of the papal chair, he committed many mistakes, and resigned after a pontificate of five months.
