Charlevoix, François Xavier

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

(1682-1761) Jesuit historian, born Saint Quentin, France; died La Fleche. He taught in Quebec for four years, and later (1720-1723) explored the French colonies in America, at the request of the government. For twenty-two years he was an editor of the "Memoires de Trevoux," a monthly journal of bibliography, history, and science. He wrote a biography of Mother Marie de l'Incarnation,and histories of Japan, San Domingo, Paraguay, and Canada. The last (Histoire et description generale de la Nouvelle France) is his most important work, and was translated by John Gilmary Shea (History of New France, New York, 6 volumes, 1866-1872).
