Cloyne, Ireland, Diocese of
1910 New Catholic Dictionary
Comprises a large portion of County Cork. Suffragan of the archdiocese of Cashel. First bishop, Saint Colman MacLenin (560-601). Seven recorded devastations of Cloyne took place from 822-1137. Its bishops were nearly all English from 1265-1429. Cloyne and Cork were united under Bishop Purcell (1429). Ross was separated 1849. The ancient cathedral at Cloyne has been used by Protestants since the 16th century. The current cathedral is Saint Colman in Cobh.
