1910 New Catholic Dictionary

(French: awl-heart) A small tribe of Salishan stock, formerly residing in Idaho and now on a reservation within the same boundaries. The entire tribe was converted to Catholicity within ten years after the Jesuit Father Nicholas Point, in 1841, established the De Smet mission. They have greatly advanced in industry, prosperity, and intelligence.
