1910 New Catholic Dictionary

A name given to the Apostles constituting one moral hierarchical body (not a body of equals) under Saint Peter as their head (Matthew 10; 11; 16; Luke 22). After the death of Judas to show that Christ wished them to be a religious society, they immediately elected Matthias "to take the place of this ministry and 'Apostleship" (Acts 1)
