Communion, Lay
1910 New Catholic Dictionary
The state of a layman in communion with the Catholic Church, i.e.,not excommunicated. Since it includes his fitness to receive the Holy Eucharist, the term is sometimes taken to mean the state of a priest or cleric, excluded from the celebration of Mass or other functions of his order, but permitted to receive Holy Communion.
