1910 New Catholic Dictionary

Painter, born Bologna, Italy, 1581; died Naples, Italy, 1641. After studying in the Carracci Academy, Bologna, he went early to Rome where he was employed in decorating many of the churches and was honored by Gregory XV. He excelled in portraiture and in the landscapes introduced into his religious pictures. His masterpiece, "The Communion of Saint Jerome," now in the Vatican collection, is considered one of the great pictures of the world.
