Domitian

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

Roman emperor (81-96). He was the first of the emperors to declare himself a deity. In spite of his private vices he endeavored to reform morals and religion. For this reason he inaugurated a severe persecution of the Christians, to which references are made in the Apocalypse, which was written during his time. Before the end of his reign he ceased to persecute.
