1910 New Catholic Dictionary
An epoch, a period, or a series of years, having some distinctive historical character, e.g., the Christian era, introduced by a Scythian monk (c.527) who calculated the birth of Christ in 753 A.U.C. (Lat., ab urbe condita, from the foundation of the city) and fixed the following year 754 A.U.O. as year 1 of the "years of the Lord."
