Foucault, Jean Bernard Leon

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

Catholic physicist. Born Paris, France, 1819; died there, 1868. He refuted the corpuscular theory of light and by his automatic regulator rendered electric lighting practicable. Invented the Foucault pendulum and a gyroscope by which he visibly demonstrated the rotation of the earth. His name has been given to certain electrical currents (also called eddy currents), because of his careful study of the subject.
