(Hebrew: fortune, luck)

  1. Patriarch, seventh son of Jacob (Genesis 35).

  2. Tribe of Israel dwelling east of the Jordan, between Manasses on the north and Ruben on the south. They were a war-like race whose valor is highly praised in the parting blessing of Moses (Deuteronomy 33), and in the prophecy of Jacob (Genesis 49).

  3. Hebrew prophet (1 Kings 22), contemporary of King David.

  4. Pagan divinity (Isaiah 65:11, where the Hebrew Gad is rendered "fortune").
