Guise, François

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

Son of Claude Guise, 2nd duke of Guise, born Bar, France, 1519; died 1563. He defended Metz against Charles V, 1552; invaded the territory of Naples, 1557; expelled the English from Calais, 1558; and frustrated a Huguenot plot to murder him, 1560. He was assassinated while attempting to take Orleans during the war in the cause of religion.
