(c.850-913) Archbishop of Mainz, a Swabian Benedictine of Fulda, Abbot of Reichenau and Ellwangen. He labored to consolidate Germany under a strong central ruler, and so incurred the hatred of the nobles. He has been grossly maligned by historians; and the story of his having been eaten by mice and rats in punishment for his callousness during a famine has no historical foundation.
