1910 New Catholic Dictionary

(Greek: hedomai, take pleasure)

A group of ethical systems holding that feelings of pleasure or happiness are the highest and final aim of conduct, so that actions increasing the sum of pleasure are thereby right and those increasing pain are thereby wrong. This happiness may be that of the agent, or that of the greatest number.
