1910 New Catholic Dictionary

May 24, established by Pope Pius VII, 1814, in thanksgiving for his safe return to Rome after five years captivity at Savona. It is the patronal feast of Australasia and has spread throughout nearly the whole Church but is not in the universal calendar. The invocation "Auxilium Christianorum" (Latin: Help of Christians) was inserted in the litany by Pius V in gratitude to Our Lady for the Christian victory over the Turks at the battle of Lepanto, 1571.
