1910 New Catholic Dictionary

A diriment impediment to matrimony. If a party has contracted an invalid marriage with another, or if they have lived in public and notorious concubinage, the impediment exists between each of them and the ancestors and descendants of the other to the second degree in the direct line, i.e.,from grandparents to grand-children. There is no impediment collaterally.
