Hyssop

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

A plant of unknown identity, mentioned in Scripture, and found in Egypt, Sinai, and Chanaan, used in sprinkling the blood of the paschal lamb or victims of sacrifice. The plant of the Mosaic ritual is the Origanum maru of the family of labiatre, growing on the terrace walls of Palestine and Syria. It is referred to in the Miserere (Psalms 50).
