1910 New Catholic Dictionary
(Greek: kapnos, smoke; manteia, divination)
Divination by the ascent or motion of smoke. This custom, started in early Greece, was considered a favorable omen if the smoke from burned incense or in connection with a sacrifice rose vertically.
