Leonine City

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

Name given to that part of Rome, situated on the right bank of the Tiber, which is so called in honor of Pope Saint Leo IV, who surrounded it with a wall, 848-852, when the Saracens were menacing the city. It contains the Basilica of Saint Peter and the Vatican.
