Nave

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

Central open space of a church, west of the choir or chancel and separated therefrom by It wall or screen. It is divided from the side aisles by columns, shafts, or piers, and is roofed with timber or vaulted in masonry. Colloquially, nave indicates the portion of a church reserved for worshippers, including the central and side aisles, and crossing transepts.
