Confessor, Bishop of Paris, born near Autun, France, 496; died Paris, France, 576. He was Abbot of Saint Symphorien near Autun and was promoted in 555 to the see of Paris, where he exercised a reforming influence on King Childebert. In 588 he dedicated the church of Saint Vincent, which, after Germain's relics had been translated therein 754, received his own name. The monastery erected close by, Saint Germain-des-Pres, was famous for centuries. His relics at Saint Germain-des-Pres were dispersed, c1793Feast, May 28,.
