Phoenix

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

A bird like an eagle which came out of Arabia every 500 years to Heliopolis, where it burned itself on the altar and rose again from its ashes, young and beautiful; it is an emblem of immortality. The word phoenix might possibly be read instead of palm-tree in Job 29, which seems to refer to the belief in its immortality.
