Postulation

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

(Latin: postulare, to ask)

It may happen that the electors to an office regard a certain person as more fitted for the office than others, but there stands in the way of his being elected a canonical impediment, from which a dispensation can and is usually granted; in that case the electors can by their votes postulate his appointment from the competent superior. The Code of Canon Law treats of this method of appointment.
