The appellation given by Saint John (12; 14; 16), like "prince of the heathen world" in rabbinic theology and "god of this world" in Saint Paul (2 Corinthians 4), to the chief of the fallen angels, who through sin and death exercises dominion over the present world. With the victorious death of Christ, however, the judgment of this rule has already begun (John 12), the end of which is foretold in the Apocalypse 20.
