Reserved Cases

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

Sins or censures, the right to absolve from which is restricted to certain confessors or ecclesiastical superiors. These cases are divided into papal, episcopal, and religious, in so far as the power to absolve from them is confined (under ordinary circumstances, at least) to the pope, a bishop, or a religious superior respectively.
