Rheims, France, Archdiocese of
1910 New Catholic Dictionary
Founded as a diocese during the 3century. Elevated to an archdiocese during the 4th century. From the 10th century, the archbishops enjoyed the title of count and the privilege of coining money, and levying arms. In 999 they obtained their important prerogative, the coronation of the kings, which they held until the time of Charles X. The archdiocese was suppressed on November 29, 1801 but restored on October 6, 1822. Suffragen dioceses include
