Risus Paschalis

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

(Latin: paschal laughter)

A strange custom which originated in Bavaria in the 15th century. The priest inserted in his sermon funny stories which caused his hearers to laugh; then he would draw a moral from the story. This gave rise to abuses, and was prohibited by Pope Clement X.
