Rosecrans, William Starke

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

Military strategist, inventor, coal-oil company executive, diplomat, politician, and U.S. Army officer. Born on September 6, 1819 in Kingston, Ohio; died on March 11, 1898 near Redondo, California. While teaching at West Point Military Academy, he became a Catholic. In the Civil War he won high repute until defeated at Chickamauga. Brother of Sylvester Horton Rosecrans.
