Wonersh, England. This college, founded by the Right Reverend John Butt, fourth Bishop of Southwark, is the earliest establishment in England designed to fulfil the wishes of the Council of Trent. The building, commenced in 1889, was opened September 8, 1901. During the interval a temporary home was found for the first students of the seminary at Henfield Place, Henfield, Sussex. The rector was Father Francis Bourne, later cardinal. In a few years the number of students rose to 100, and it was found necessary to establish the school at Hyde House, Clapham Park. This school did not survive long, and after World War I Bishop Amigo of Southwark founded the College of Saint Joseph at Mark Cross, Sussex, for the boys in humanities. Saint John's, Wonersh, became then a house of philosophy, theology, and the allied sciences only.
