Saint Victor, Abbey of

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

Founded near Paris in 1108 by William of Champeaux. Through the generosity of popes and noblemen it was richly endowed, and became a center of piety and learning. The abbey school, together with those of Saint Genevieve and Notre Dame, was the cradle of the University of Paris. The end of the abbey came with the French Revolution. In 1800 the church and other buildings were confiscated; and the library was dispersed. There are still several convents at Bruges, Ypres, and Neuilly, which keep the rule and spirit originally received from the Abbey of Saint Victor.
