Schwarz, Berthold

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

Sometimes listed as Berthold Schwartz, Berthold der Schwarze, or Berthold the Black. German friar, said to have been born in Freiburg in the first half of the 13th century as Konstantin Anklitzen. He is commonly admitted to have been the inventor of firearms, but his right to be considered the inventor of gunpowder is doubtful.
